The Hunger Games (series)

Description (in English)

Originally a trilogy of novels, The Hunger Games has also been made into a series of four movies. This entry covers both the books and the movies.

The story is set in a future nation called Panem, where people in the Capitol are rich and decadent, and people living in the Districts are oppressed and hungry. Every year, two young people from each District are "reaped"and become "tributes" who are sent to the "Hunger Games", which are televised games where the last tribute alive wins and is awarded food and riches for the rest of their lives. Katniss Everdeen, the main character, volunteers to become a tribute when her younger sister Prim is "reaped". The first book (and movie) ends when the game is won. The second and third books tell the story of the increasing rebellions and eventual downfall of the Capital, and Katniss's role as the inspirational "Mockingjay", who has become a symbol of the revolution.
