Remi and Oda have just fallen in love when she finds out that she is dying of cancer. Her friend Birgitte runs a research project aiming at creating digital versions of people, and Birgitte and Remi talk Oda into having her brain scanned so they can attempt to reconstruct her consciousness after she is dead. After her death, Remi keeps receiving strange messages, odd words on digital signs and on his phone, and he realises that these are communications from a very fragmented and dispersed version of Oda that exists on the internet. He heals her by feeding her with a detailed compilation of written descriptions of sensory experiences accompanied by brain scans documenting how he feels when thinking of this "sense map" (sansekart) and she reappears at the end of the novel as a powerful, benevolent consciousness about to communicate with everybody through data systems.
